About Michael Jakeman

 

Michael Jakeman holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta and a Juris Doctor from the University of Victoria (2006). 


Over nearly two decades in practice, he has worked extensively in Indigenous justice, real estate, family and criminal law, earning a reputation for his commitment to community-focused legal services and strong client relationships.


Now concentrating exclusively on family law in Greater Victoria, Michael brings both depth of legal experience and a compassionate, solution-oriented approach to every case.

If you’ve never dealt with a family law matter before, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about where to start. My goal is to make the process as clear, supportive, and stress-free as possible. Here’s how it usually works when you contact me.

Step 1: First Contact

When you call or email:

  • I’ll ask for a quick overview of your situation.
     
  • I’ll do a brief Conflict of Interest Check to make sure I can represent you.
     
  • I’ll let you know my consultation fee and answer any initial questions.
     
  • We’ll book a consultation at a time that works for you, and I’ll confirm it by email along with a short guide on what to expect.
     

Step 2: Your Consultation

You can choose to meet in person, by phone, or on Zoom.

  • I’ll start by explaining that everything you share is confidential.
     
  • I’ll listen carefully to your story, ask clarifying questions, and give you honest, practical legal advice.
     
  • We’ll go over your options, possible next steps, and what the process could look like for your case.
     
  • If you’d like to work together, I’ll explain my retainer and send you an agreement to review and sign before we get started.
     

Step 3: Working Together

Once I’m officially your lawyer:

  • I’ll review all your documents and create a tailored plan for your case.
     
  • I’ll keep you informed at every step—no letters sent or actions taken without your approval.
     
  • I’ll communicate with the other party, whether through negotiation, mediation, or court proceedings, always with your best interests in mind.
     
  • You’ll always have clear updates and guidance so you know exactly where things stand.
     

Step 4: Resolution

Most family law cases settle through agreement or mediation, but if court is necessary, I’ll guide you through each step.

  • Once your matter is resolved, I’ll return your documents and any unused retainer funds.
     
  • I’ll securely store your file for at least 10 years in case you ever need it.
     

Family law can be emotional and complex—but you don’t have to go through it alone. I’m here to guide you with compassion, clear communication, and a focus on achieving the best possible outcome for you and your family.

The length of a divorce case can vary depending on the specifics of the case, such as the complexity of the issues involved and the level of conflict between the parties. In general, a divorce case can take anywhere from a few months to over a year to be resolved.

In determining child custody, the court considers several factors, including the child's age, health, and well-being, the relationship between the child and each parent, and the ability of each parent to provide for the child's physical and emotional needs.

My hourly rate for family law is $500 CAD.
